Understanding Customer Verification Results

This guide explains how to interpret the verification of identity documents and biometrics checks.

Introduction

When viewing a customer's profile in the Client Portal, two panels show the results of identity verification: Identity document(s) and Biometric checks. Each panel gives you a confidence-based outcome rather than a simple pass or fail, so you can quickly assess how much confidence to place in a customer's verification and what, if anything, needs review.

The Identity Opinion Model

VerifiMe presents verification outcomes as an Identity Opinion across four confidence levels:

● Low confidence

● Substantial confidence

● High confidence

● Very high confidence

This replaces the previous pass/fail traffic light system. Rather than a binary result, the Identity Opinion reflects how much confidence VerifiMe has that the documents and biometrics provided genuinely belong to, and were provided by, the person being verified.

1. Identity document(s)

What it shows: The confidence level in the identity documents a customer has submitted, based on document authenticity checks and cross-checks against independent authoritative sources (such as government databases).

Why it matters to you: A low confidence result does not necessarily mean a document is invalid — it means the documents provided did not meet the verification checks to a high standard. Selecting View Assessment takes you to the full assessment so you can see how the verification checks have influenced the risk rating and what you need to do to mitigate the risks according to your organisation's policy guidance.

Typical outcomes:

Very high / High confidence: The identity documents were read digitally and their format, structure and security features were checked against our library of known document templates for these document types. The documents are consistent with genuine documents. The details on the documents were also confirmed against an independent source.

Substantial confidence: The document is consistent with a genuine document but details not confirmed against an independent authoritative source.

Low confidence: Low level of confidence in this person’s identity documents. Documents provided did not meet the verification checks. This does not necessarily mean the document is invalid.

Under review: The customer’s identity documents are currently being checked. No conclusions have been made yet.

2. Biometric checks

What it shows: The confidence level that the person who completed the biometric check (liveness and photo match) is the same person shown on the identity document.

Why it matters to you: This combines what were previously two separate checks — i) Face Check: Liveness and ii) Face Check: Photo Match — into a single confidence outcome. Selecting View Evidence shows the biometric capture and the document photo side by side.

Typical outcomes:

High confidence: High level of confidence that the person who completed the check is the person shown on the identity document.

Low confidence: Low level of confidence that the person who completed the check is the person shown on the identity document.

In progress: No outcome is available yet.

Not completed: The customer has not completed their biometric check.

Verification Details table

Below the two confidence panels, the Verification Details table lists each document provided, with:

● Document type (e.g. Driver Licence, Passport, Medicare Card)

● Name on document — broken down by given name, middle name, and family name where applicable, so you can see at a glance whether a middle name is present on one document but not another

● Expiry date

● Country of issue

● Last updated date

This is new: the previous version did not surface country of issue or a per-field name breakdown. Use this to quickly spot naming or issuance mismatches without needing to open the full assessment.

ID Compliance Report

A downloadable ID Compliance Report is available directly from the customer record via the button in the top right of the screen. This provides an audit-ready summary of the verification outcome for your records.

How These Checks Work Together

The Identity document(s) and Biometric check panels together give you a comprehensive view of the verification:

● Identity document(s) confirms whether genuine, authoritative-source-verified documents were provided

● Biometric check confirms a real, live person completed the process and matches the document

When both panels show Very High or High confidence, you have strong assurance that the customer provided genuine documents and is the legitimate holder of those documents.

Using This for Compliance

These confidence outcomes help you meet your AML/CTF obligations by:

● Providing audit evidence: the ID Compliance Report gives a quick, exportable record of the verification outcome

● Flagging issues: Low confidence or Under Review / Not Completed outcomes alert you to items requiring manual review

● Supporting risk assessment: verification outcomes inform your customer risk classification

● Demonstrating due diligence: clear documentation of verification steps taken

What to Do When Confidence Is Low

If either panel shows Low confidence, the system will typically assign a medium or high risk rating to the customer, depending on your organisation's AML/CTF program configuration.

When this happens, you should:

● Select View Assessment or View Evidence to see the detail behind the results

● Refer to the mitigation templates generated by your AML/CTF program settings

● Follow the mitigation steps outlined in the templates

● Document your mitigation actions in the customer's notes before marking complete with a pass or fail.
